I guess you could call this a "guest post" from <a href="http://tjsoa.co/">Haley's Husband</a>. Haley is currently driving to Waco Texas for her sister's wedding on Saturday. She has done a lot of amazing crafts for that wedding that hopefully she will do tutorials on in coming weeks. In the mean time I thought you might like an update on some of the crafty things that she has been doing lately. Especially since some of you may be visiting this site in reference to meeting her at a recent craft fair, or the hardware store. She seems to make friends everywhere she goes :) </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Yesterday (Saturday Oct 10) she attended the <a href="http://mandeville%20trailhead%20community%20market/" target="_blank">Mandeville Trailhead Community Market</a>. This is her first Farmers market/street fair in a while. My posts aren't typically as orderly or aesthetically crafted as hers, so I'll just leave you with a few pictures and a few words until her next post, or you run into her at another market.</div>

These are a variety of doors, windows and assorted salvaged wood that we have found around New Orleans. If you request a specific image in advance Haley can have it ready at an event or sell it to you online through <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/Oaks" target="_blank">her ETSY shop</a>. Otherwise stop by her next booth and she can often make one on the spot; she always has her laptop and vinyl cutter with her, though her selection of colors may be limited to black and white.</div>

To be perfectly honest I'm not entirely sure what to call these beaded beauties. They are wall hanging Fleur De Lis made out of wood and glass and porcelain. She also makes crosses and other shapes that you may have seen around. She sold a lot of them when we lived in Boise and Texas, and these are the first she's made since we've moved to Louisiana. These are my favorite thing that she makes (possibly with the exception of cookies!), but they are VERY labor intensive so she doesn't usually make very many of them, and at your typical craft fair the price of $125-$150 for the large ones can startle some people.</div>

This is the first time that she has sold her cookies or bow ties, though I don't know why. They are amazing, and she has been making them for a while for friends and family. The Halloween sign is based off of a 6 foot version she made for our house last year and received a lot of compliments on. </div>

Thanks for checking out the blog, and I'll make sure Haley keeps you posted on when/where she will next have a booth. Right now it's up in the air, but she might become a regular part of the Mandeville market.</div>

<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.diyupholsterysupply.com/" target="_blank">DIY Upholstery Supply</a>: The site can be a little difficult to navigate, but it has a wealth of information, and is a great resource for finding the professional tools you need to get started!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.modhomeec.com/" target="_blank">ModHomeEc</a>: I found this after taking my class (unfortunately). This is another AMAZING lady who has upholstery tutorials and tips for creating fun, modern furniture!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Jenny Komenda Interiors</a>: (or little green notebook) I knew I wanted to add this to my favs after looking at it for 5 min. She has ACCURATE tutorials! using proper upholstery techniques, with simple instructions and TONS of pictures! yay!!! and interior design ideas :)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://spruceaustin.com/" target="_blank">Spruce Austin</a>: The hip ladies (and Gentlefellas?) at Spruce in Austin have a keen artistic eye to reinvent furniture. They currently have a few videos on youtube and have recently released a series of DVDs (for a great price!) to help give you the confidence you need to start that project.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.threeboys.net/" target="_blank">Three Boys</a>: A work from home mom who goes for it! She did 30 Days of upholstery last October that has some great vids (plus she does lots of other fun projects)!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://ana-white.com/" target="_blank">Anna White</a>: A stay at home mom who is a literal homemaker (home-builder) with free step-by-step furniture building plans complete with cut lists and finishing tutorials (her site used to be called knock-off wood, but had to be changed because of angry big box stores)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/25-us-cities-with-upholstery-c-122648" target="_blank">Find a Class</a>: Here is the original post I found when looking for an upholstery class near me. It has 16 major cities listed, plus a few extras in the comments.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://design-seeds.com/" target="_blank">Color Combos</a>: I know this website is intended for paint colors, but it is a great resource for color combinations if you care to mix and match fabrics on your furniture to make a real stand out piece.Haley Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15847890249233960193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135991924648950515.post-30499362548097833372013-01-08T22:56:00.000-06:002013-01-08T23:05:48.607-06:002013 Craft It Forward<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A homemade book stand for the man in your life, just in time for fathers day. I saw this <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/118712140147271536/" target="_blank">bookstand</a> on <a href="http://pinterest.com/haleysonofander/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a> a while back and know I had to make one. It totally elevates the classiness of your nightstand and can be made in an afternoon and for about $6 for 2....<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Supplies:<br />
a 1"x12"x4ft piece of lumber (could probably use a 1"x8"x4ft piece)<br />
wood glue<br />
clamps (either welding or wood glue-ing clamp)<br />
table saw<br />
book for sizing (optional)<br />
<br />
<br />
Alright all you handy ladies out there, lets get brave and roll out that table saw!<br />
<br />
1.) measure the size of your book. I mad mine the width of the pages and a little taller than the book. It ended up being 7 1/2" x 9 1/2". Cut the sides square to the exact size you want them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqBdn6aU-hxt9IkZMPThn57Jeox7cG_ahjo_kzpVhVIjVyN7-y2KwggOvtvKL7NBkxdrCaEJzBnzbGl_5hcDc9vEDnTDkJ6g2NvYrF3zK_j1ODdXdwgV25FVayLkQUnG3PQQEhrTniZw5c/s1600/6-12-2012+129.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqBdn6aU-hxt9IkZMPThn57Jeox7cG_ahjo_kzpVhVIjVyN7-y2KwggOvtvKL7NBkxdrCaEJzBnzbGl_5hcDc9vEDnTDkJ6g2NvYrF3zK_j1ODdXdwgV25FVayLkQUnG3PQQEhrTniZw5c/s320/6-12-2012+129.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
use guide rail to make sure that both long sides of your triangle end up the same size. You can also cut your bottom piece to the same width at this time<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMLq9f2dYRL8183NZnzSKgHqGh7YUPurKS9FSy7vJLvT7H5laVQJRt4F-vsN7pQN-rju2lN9qAptr-U7QU-k9MZ-N69j5Cn0NB5Qzt3l6inhJay32i5B9nano1bM7AXBXmZ8-mtEi5b43i/s1600/6-12-2012+131.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMLq9f2dYRL8183NZnzSKgHqGh7YUPurKS9FSy7vJLvT7H5laVQJRt4F-vsN7pQN-rju2lN9qAptr-U7QU-k9MZ-N69j5Cn0NB5Qzt3l6inhJay32i5B9nano1bM7AXBXmZ8-mtEi5b43i/s320/6-12-2012+131.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
2.) Draw on the edge of the boards to make sure you cut them in the correct direction. The top edge of each of these is going to be 18 degrees. Or you can measure out a not so steep triangle if you like. <b>So crank that blade angle over to 18 degrees and move your guide rail to 0 inches from the blade (or as close to zero as you can get).</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizcjGaqedhc96CfEogSwU6HWFI6E3hiuPSA4acSSj9uGoM0vVxvDtnAt2QAsqsposuc8L8rwiJmNTOY7nsp3L40nKEpRvImfYoCNCWRBqszWZy3YCm-yhnnNWnCL-NVkLRUDP9RqgEnxku/s1600/6-12-2012+122.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizcjGaqedhc96CfEogSwU6HWFI6E3hiuPSA4acSSj9uGoM0vVxvDtnAt2QAsqsposuc8L8rwiJmNTOY7nsp3L40nKEpRvImfYoCNCWRBqszWZy3YCm-yhnnNWnCL-NVkLRUDP9RqgEnxku/s320/6-12-2012+122.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<b>you are going to feed the wood through vertically, so take extra safety prcations!!!</b><br />
<b>WEAR SAFETY GLASSES! and USE A JIG TO PUSH YOUR PIECE THROUGH THE CUTS! If you are also too nervous to hold the top of the wood, you can always put a clamp on it and hold the handle of the clamp</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdPIE7TID0tdXkbZGdLqof3wfGYTe-IWMNja2W8EIsegkhuqwZmiPQtICxP9RFn4T_X5FwFFnTYWXIH81Tqv_QIxjGLFE0Cc6ulNIq5EQU-sdpf6be8yl457Gjw-QpWvgHYdOCFox7Cjpz/s1600/6-12-2012+135.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdPIE7TID0tdXkbZGdLqof3wfGYTe-IWMNja2W8EIsegkhuqwZmiPQtICxP9RFn4T_X5FwFFnTYWXIH81Tqv_QIxjGLFE0Cc6ulNIq5EQU-sdpf6be8yl457Gjw-QpWvgHYdOCFox7Cjpz/s320/6-12-2012+135.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
now cut the top angle of both pieces of wood. <b>Repeat with the bottom edge which will have an angle of 36 degrees. </b> After you cut both pieces they should look like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDwuR1q_465aHPkTwG5PXMlHgBLd_9jECrprcjRMxpoyUa87Lp30vKpSJbeyTeY3M5E-Ir3XGwvDcbI-NvZq9-HZC58i1OaoW55xtvzkW9aSUd-1QhIcbYxffPNIcz3W5rG5mTLfUCYaaE/s1600/6-12-2012+132.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDwuR1q_465aHPkTwG5PXMlHgBLd_9jECrprcjRMxpoyUa87Lp30vKpSJbeyTeY3M5E-Ir3XGwvDcbI-NvZq9-HZC58i1OaoW55xtvzkW9aSUd-1QhIcbYxffPNIcz3W5rG5mTLfUCYaaE/s320/6-12-2012+132.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
3.) Glue the top angle together and clamp. **note: have a wet rag available to remove excess glue. If it is not wiped off, it will penetrate the wood and the wood will not hold a stain. If you are painting, its a pain to sand off.**<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM9Elx23UA4TMMHdtGvfFy8bD26NWcpZO5babQkHOpb5YmHzwrTMB30mbP2v2KfIZVC3Jio5Jf67KgF97PiQsdrsaV2RJ5JvyZr-WLTsCMGTsaBF9T59BwaYuEvnq3kp89ipJt5_yHQFLu/s1600/6-12-2012+143.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM9Elx23UA4TMMHdtGvfFy8bD26NWcpZO5babQkHOpb5YmHzwrTMB30mbP2v2KfIZVC3Jio5Jf67KgF97PiQsdrsaV2RJ5JvyZr-WLTsCMGTsaBF9T59BwaYuEvnq3kp89ipJt5_yHQFLu/s320/6-12-2012+143.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The one on the left has welding clamps and the one on the right has wood glue clamps (which they make in a miniature size that would have been great to have for this project)<br />
Allow to dry for an hour. While that is drying:<br />
<br />
4.) Cut your bottom piece to the correct width if you haven't already done so. Then set the clamp top on the wood and trace the needed width of your bottom piece. Again, draw the angles you are cutting on the outer edge to keep from getting confused.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheFYEh0lmf_rzBgmzZACMok9eZ_yMyF3jVk02z1COJLfwq8Q22UkkBLeDQ4gA_EINPbi74daqW9yhUfWwLfA-hmvxzy_2JiIWkQFwwGke5478bGQsFdnJ1GhyX-1NAYfJ-3x5F418yBRZe/s1600/6-12-2012+119.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheFYEh0lmf_rzBgmzZACMok9eZ_yMyF3jVk02z1COJLfwq8Q22UkkBLeDQ4gA_EINPbi74daqW9yhUfWwLfA-hmvxzy_2JiIWkQFwwGke5478bGQsFdnJ1GhyX-1NAYfJ-3x5F418yBRZe/s320/6-12-2012+119.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
5.) Glue the bottom piece on. I had to use the same clamps I had on the top for the bottom, so I had to wait until the top had set before doing this (about an hour). I also had a bench with a gap in it, so I was able to flip the piece upside down and clamp the bottom (sorry, I forgot to get a picture of this.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRfF1GwWJRIY8yEyoewa7AisbE7bhwZOiGC_wHW1g58KGL-hlURJGsnn8ZsjmVMk0CoHPTVwA8dFfBB9kl3-KuZZzP6Jr2LyksQkve706qO2cLfh14IXyJMpxRPopy-EvkGWKZrijPlm0G/s1600/6-12-2012+139.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRfF1GwWJRIY8yEyoewa7AisbE7bhwZOiGC_wHW1g58KGL-hlURJGsnn8ZsjmVMk0CoHPTVwA8dFfBB9kl3-KuZZzP6Jr2LyksQkve706qO2cLfh14IXyJMpxRPopy-EvkGWKZrijPlm0G/s320/6-12-2012+139.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
Ta-Da!!!<br />
6.) I then sanded them like crazy! (make sure you wait at least another hour before doing this) First I used a belt sander to get all the pieces flush on the sides. I then used a heavy grain sandpaper in a triangular sander to remove the cut marks and get the corner edges smooth-ish and even. I then used a 150 grit (220 would be better) to get everything silky smooth.<br />
7.) Stain the outside (optional). I like using a wood conditioner before doing this, to help the stain go on evenly. Note that even after all of that sanding, I had several invisible glue drip spots that appeared when the stain went on.<br />
8.) Gift and enjoy!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a name='more'></a>I'm going to use this post to formally apologize to those wonderful folks who have been checking the blog in anticipation of tutorials....I'm Sorry. GOOD NEWS! I have been continuing my 52 weeks of pintopia, and taking photos, I just haven't had the time (or, honestly, the energy) to post them. However, I am happy to write that they will be coming soon, so stay tuned!<br />
<br />
Our trip across the country was crazy! Tj got food poisoning the day he left with the big truck, leaving me to clean up and get rid of extra furniture. I couldn't believe how much trash we ended up having....Considering this is the first cross country move we've made where we haven't blown a tire, I'd say it was actually one of the smoothest moves we've had (speaking from the non-ill, non-driver) We are SO grateful to have been blessed by the love and support of our friends and family over the past couple of weeks. <b>We really miss our friends in Milwaukee</b>, but are happy to be getting settled in here in NOLA. xoxoxoHaley Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15847890249233960193noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135991924648950515.post-49049909020223350822012-04-15T21:26:00.000-05:002012-04-15T21:58:08.817-05:00Princess Catherine Inspired Hat(let)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://pinterest.com/haleysonofander/" target="_blank">Pintopia Week 2</a>: Kate Middleton is known for her extensive hat collection. What better time to copy a princess than Easter?<br />
<a name='more'></a>This is the hat that I <a href="http://pinterest.com/haleysonofander/hats/" target="_blank">pinned</a> off a blog and thought the construction would be similar to the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKcbk6xnSz4" target="_blank">mad hatter hat</a> that I made for my husbands halloween costume<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In retrospect, there are a couple of things I would have done differently. When I made the made the mad hatter brim, I pulled the fabric as tightly as I could.<b> So tight that the wire starts to warp</b>. I didn't do this. The hat looked great the first time I wore it, but the second time (when the photos were taken) it looked sloppy from the fabric getting stretched out. <b>Secondly, I would either sew some ribbon to bottom edge of the hat</b>, or wrap it to give a cleaner look, or construct the hat differently by serging a tube for the wire and then sewing the fabric directly to the wire filled tube. <b>Third, I would link the wire instead of just taping it and use stiffer wire</b> (this will be shown in a future tutorial..) because my wire came loose and that added to the sloppiness.</div>

Ok, Here We Go!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Supplies:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1/4+ yards of fabric</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Wire (I used 19 gauge but a coat hanger might work better)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Plate</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lots of pins</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Optional Ribbon and flower fabric</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 1.)</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Make your oval pattern. </b> I traced my plate on onion paper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW0si6u6PxPjx4xPyXvrIL7MRAntR21bi3DMkcRYowr2-TCkY0E40tpxcX3UUw1CE6cbKYxPGW_jZzHF7BzuUK4u2g2BsHfIELr1ODx3gmhInvFCRpNQP_YlQd7RbGYTKfybxr5hyHC7De/s1600/9-April-2012+221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW0si6u6PxPjx4xPyXvrIL7MRAntR21bi3DMkcRYowr2-TCkY0E40tpxcX3UUw1CE6cbKYxPGW_jZzHF7BzuUK4u2g2BsHfIELr1ODx3gmhInvFCRpNQP_YlQd7RbGYTKfybxr5hyHC7De/s320/9-April-2012+221.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then found the center of the circle, and traced the plate again</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Draw a line mating each edge and cut out your pattern</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7obXMCmjXWSoekyqSzC5-bIdJ5VIab9FoVzLe7TxuvtdapKay-NnC8hnrjbkVZZONcQKHk-Cv1gg0W44WTgcochXL3YBOJf8qk6hql-Q0USHDcpwrEI0niCpVbt2Xw9eiJJyhtIvKuLXy/s1600/9-April-2012+225.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7obXMCmjXWSoekyqSzC5-bIdJ5VIab9FoVzLe7TxuvtdapKay-NnC8hnrjbkVZZONcQKHk-Cv1gg0W44WTgcochXL3YBOJf8qk6hql-Q0USHDcpwrEI0niCpVbt2Xw9eiJJyhtIvKuLXy/s320/9-April-2012+225.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I felt like mine was too big, so I folded it until it was the length I wanted</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 2.)</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Trace the pattern onto the fabric</b>. Cut outside the pattern and then fold and iron to your traced line.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5OKKUr1iyV6r-S9r3c2SWn1HEfB2IjfE-Lcxym9SwofEwtPDK8mWlajz3dU8k5zYDqSGOxbInRjZUadJhPDbRO8I2g42RhtjKaInhf_YP0zAe4O-TSdcjlhqFQ2K1kFRnrEt9fT0nOu7o/s1600/9-April-2012+248.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5OKKUr1iyV6r-S9r3c2SWn1HEfB2IjfE-Lcxym9SwofEwtPDK8mWlajz3dU8k5zYDqSGOxbInRjZUadJhPDbRO8I2g42RhtjKaInhf_YP0zAe4O-TSdcjlhqFQ2K1kFRnrEt9fT0nOu7o/s320/9-April-2012+248.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stitch your fold down and then cut a length of wire to go around your drawn line. I taped it with electrical tape. It would be smart to use needle nose pliers to hook the ends of the wire like links, then tape around the outside.</div>

You can make this bad boy for your bedroom that looks like you spent $1500 for only $150!<br />
<a name='more'></a><b>Step 1.)</b><br />
Take your measurements and buy your supplies. This was a queen size headboard dimensions are 62"w X 60" h (from floor to peek) you need:<br />
<ul>
<li>1 roll of foam 25" x 80" (we used 3") </li>
<li>3 yards of fabric</li>
<li>20+ covered (or whatever) buttons</li>
<li>Button tufting twine</li>
<li>Scraps of sag-less webbing</li>
<li> Long double pointed needle</li>
<li>About 200" of piping</li>
<li>Plygrip (optional)</li>
<li>Rubber mallot (optional)</li>
<li>Regulator or bbq skewer (optional)</li>
<li>Tackstrip </li>
<li>Chalk</li>
<li>Cotton or Dacron (I bought 1 roll of cotton from <a href="http://www.duboisfabrics.com/default.asp" target="_blank">dlt upholstery supply</a>)</li>
<li>a piece of plywood, mdf, particle board, or pegboard big enough for your headboard. I found particle board at the re-store for $4 and then framed it out with plywood scrap I had laying around the garage</li>
</ul>
<b>Step 2.)</b><br />
Mark your lumber and cut it into your desired shape:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh39_dUg14lTWauQtz8MiKax4pq6a7OuEHkvHHSiuPdyZ7R5n9SIFhyphenhyphenakOEt1_ywwmatr_JQdY1Wp6JUAIY88H7-8XJ1oIuuohJlruCTyEfNkMU8Z7aDZwUqPuD9ciSN1X4Lv72Vk5JfcqX/s1600/IMG_1659.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="380" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh39_dUg14lTWauQtz8MiKax4pq6a7OuEHkvHHSiuPdyZ7R5n9SIFhyphenhyphenakOEt1_ywwmatr_JQdY1Wp6JUAIY88H7-8XJ1oIuuohJlruCTyEfNkMU8Z7aDZwUqPuD9ciSN1X4Lv72Vk5JfcqX/s400/IMG_1659.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Step 3.)</b><br />
Mark your outside lines (mine were 3.5" wide) and holes for your buttons. Drill button holes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM4JzthcpA3lk5t6miRDkYMY-Qw3zL1UJxm7CoI8cYC44ol7emTI0XLSsX_Ho_zSF-9D2j3LHnHXJpGlPqITcgE3eNZ0nK59hlaj8T_WuQD2Rnm-8ZLATER-096LB_5gMuwPy63enunFux/s1600/IMG_1650.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM4JzthcpA3lk5t6miRDkYMY-Qw3zL1UJxm7CoI8cYC44ol7emTI0XLSsX_Ho_zSF-9D2j3LHnHXJpGlPqITcgE3eNZ0nK59hlaj8T_WuQD2Rnm-8ZLATER-096LB_5gMuwPy63enunFux/s320/IMG_1650.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Step 4.)</b><br />
Draw outline of shape on the foam and figure out a way to cut the shape out. I used a hand radial saw to get through the top half and then used a razor blade to cut through the bottom half of the foam<br />
<br />
<b>Step 5.)</b><br />
Grind chalk on the top of the holes you drilled. Then, get someone to help you drop the foam in the right place (and push down) to mark your button holes. Go back over and mark them with a sharpie and then either cut Xs on them or cut holes to cut the foam out completely.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSeQVl8HCXEX9i8UsWsDtTCmkSf1UN4Xj1YZa_ftUo9kk1gXApM_gYdXngz1Tn-On7G4keekJTparPPHOtId9pPlIQVXDIqHYUEWq6XIWpfKvZalpn3T5PDuXTsd-HxiMmLr0Kvh0p34zi/s1600/IMG_1689.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSeQVl8HCXEX9i8UsWsDtTCmkSf1UN4Xj1YZa_ftUo9kk1gXApM_gYdXngz1Tn-On7G4keekJTparPPHOtId9pPlIQVXDIqHYUEWq6XIWpfKvZalpn3T5PDuXTsd-HxiMmLr0Kvh0p34zi/s400/IMG_1689.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
staple the outside edge of the foam down to secure<br />
<br />
You are now ready to measure and cut fabric!<br />
I measured the width of the foam and added 2" in between each button (10") plus 4" for extra staple width. This is what my layout looked like:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH8opoZ9FXaRfUywfWWkXr6rmNxkPtTeMbl9W4Za435W97ptMGnQCRtKyUYuehdSeR6yGlnsBq-Zg2iJuraCEBBvUJsgqzxJpYsNJmBbw3-bl6iFuqlfKdO71CLhTwwwOWy6MutRV697tu/s1600/cuts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH8opoZ9FXaRfUywfWWkXr6rmNxkPtTeMbl9W4Za435W97ptMGnQCRtKyUYuehdSeR6yGlnsBq-Zg2iJuraCEBBvUJsgqzxJpYsNJmBbw3-bl6iFuqlfKdO71CLhTwwwOWy6MutRV697tu/s400/cuts.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Make sure you square off your fabric with a T-square and if your fabric has a sheen, indicate the top and bottom of each piece with chalk on the back of them.You will work on the tufted center first.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRBMyt2k8HpXjQG7IyhqVVB7xlLBUdQQnWEnz6UcLtiq8oAlB3kUL1yLjffFhOPxXNgAzE33gZp5p4diqeGnhsGos8CrY99EIEbv4ndZiXfhBaDJcyAafOm2wPvWNxqUeT7K-jnul0w76w/s1600/IMG_1691.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRBMyt2k8HpXjQG7IyhqVVB7xlLBUdQQnWEnz6UcLtiq8oAlB3kUL1yLjffFhOPxXNgAzE33gZp5p4diqeGnhsGos8CrY99EIEbv4ndZiXfhBaDJcyAafOm2wPvWNxqUeT7K-jnul0w76w/s400/IMG_1691.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Step 6.)</b><br />
Mark your button holes on your fabric. There are many ways to tuft. The main three are pleated tufting, gathered tufting and pulled tufting(or standard buttoning). With this headboard we did gathered tufting. You start by centering your fabric on your foam and marking the center (with chalk or pencil) You then fold your fabric in half. Place pins all down the fold to give you a center-line. You then mark your center most button and then work your way outward from there. Now take the distance marked between each button hole on the wood and foam (10" and 11" for us) and add 1.5" and 2" extra in between each button mark.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPtdnfqZEtVdYMqudCf4AP73y7c4L0MVkVkCHEN2mExw3I4uo65Fg4XeX_FJ9Q4NdnzAly6YScwlQuCCPEXeMXehhbrcFMPoY1MZzxQ2QhN_eEAJE0XJu80gkku5V27_dMVaMdAPSDVzJj/s1600/Fabric+Marks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="232" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPtdnfqZEtVdYMqudCf4AP73y7c4L0MVkVkCHEN2mExw3I4uo65Fg4XeX_FJ9Q4NdnzAly6YScwlQuCCPEXeMXehhbrcFMPoY1MZzxQ2QhN_eEAJE0XJu80gkku5V27_dMVaMdAPSDVzJj/s400/Fabric+Marks.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Step 7.)</b><br />
Time to tuft! This step is best done with the headboard upright and the help of another person. Start by putting a lay (or 3) of cotton or Dacron over your foam. This will give your finished piece a softness. Starting with the center-most button, feed your double pointed needle through the hole in the back of the wood and through the scored dot in the foam to your partner on the other side (DO NOT LET GO OF THE BACK END OF THE NEEDLE)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDdh1Ng0YknaoCOSZhl4vFD9nSlHLPlTT6tDKmPqtzFR31BQmM4io1MYE9hYLvl4Hp8mXtWSwwbh2OMiltpvrlyBDCvkiQu1zl0X3Y3M0y48DKBTB3oX1EI2wVNCW7jqYzZIUqsTHPi4Hb/s1600/IMG_1712.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDdh1Ng0YknaoCOSZhl4vFD9nSlHLPlTT6tDKmPqtzFR31BQmM4io1MYE9hYLvl4Hp8mXtWSwwbh2OMiltpvrlyBDCvkiQu1zl0X3Y3M0y48DKBTB3oX1EI2wVNCW7jqYzZIUqsTHPi4Hb/s400/IMG_1712.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Feed the end of the needle through the correct dot on the back of the fabric. Now thread the button with the tufting twine and thread both ends of the twine through the eye of the needle.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3XRpgyDa5ZCssXTtsoSEW7YApdPsbRS87A4MlW252CVNaNAvRvOtgPqvHYE00mCfOEG1y4Jxc5dinIzpg7vJkG-Jx8oSHEwYM7fELG8Tcuxqqqeh_lXlJBMF23-9G4oHbLDqNRHZkX9Xx/s1600/IMG_1706.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3XRpgyDa5ZCssXTtsoSEW7YApdPsbRS87A4MlW252CVNaNAvRvOtgPqvHYE00mCfOEG1y4Jxc5dinIzpg7vJkG-Jx8oSHEwYM7fELG8Tcuxqqqeh_lXlJBMF23-9G4oHbLDqNRHZkX9Xx/s400/IMG_1706.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Now have the back person pull the needle on through<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQkhq3_lz9QHqn3jeQa6abblZU50guGaGsjCHHnjlbGw_4cYK8ELvxMZb3YxD7zLAdpNddhm371NQmFRASUhlS7qQM-ZZkf5u3K4DbWa9DgZkhuOsFxiCzE4_XSKZYeSSmLIwnVTHW1TRU/s1600/IMG_1707.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQkhq3_lz9QHqn3jeQa6abblZU50guGaGsjCHHnjlbGw_4cYK8ELvxMZb3YxD7zLAdpNddhm371NQmFRASUhlS7qQM-ZZkf5u3K4DbWa9DgZkhuOsFxiCzE4_XSKZYeSSmLIwnVTHW1TRU/s320/IMG_1707.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
Here comes the tough part! You can either use the <a href="http://www.schuelove.com/2011/12/tufted-headboard-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Zip Tie method</a>, which does seem much easier, and would be best for a shorter term project, but the plastic zip ties are made from deforms under long term high stress and will loosen after a while (not that big a deal) or may crack and break after a year.<br />
Now have the person on the front side push down on the buttons (don't dent the button)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxPsMVs2gMDO7PKYEY9a6rzRuMCRK-7nE0sChtGax-xZypWn_CGc_4yx5RGYM9f35cUcWS_hr7wYe5ucegkUmbcCBJqFHmC8kNgl6ARxOQLkYMwTm9TXVVQ9-gu5P4v8hdn0Xf7z3-B-Ld/s1600/IMG_1729.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-1HDMHi9ClpKwJ3CV0qlVomYFl0CcO-1NdAcmlwp1yvVrshWk9JhArAs4nUCn1fF6v0X4fS2uFHqZjLtRmaejp8bhAV3MJ1FYYCciNlzcHFRdQREc2BwYAqeA9UX-tvKc7gZNQ-jJqaWe/s1600/IMG_1728.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-1HDMHi9ClpKwJ3CV0qlVomYFl0CcO-1NdAcmlwp1yvVrshWk9JhArAs4nUCn1fF6v0X4fS2uFHqZjLtRmaejp8bhAV3MJ1FYYCciNlzcHFRdQREc2BwYAqeA9UX-tvKc7gZNQ-jJqaWe/s320/IMG_1728.JPG" width="213" /></a><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxPsMVs2gMDO7PKYEY9a6rzRuMCRK-7nE0sChtGax-xZypWn_CGc_4yx5RGYM9f35cUcWS_hr7wYe5ucegkUmbcCBJqFHmC8kNgl6ARxOQLkYMwTm9TXVVQ9-gu5P4v8hdn0Xf7z3-B-Ld/s320/IMG_1729.JPG" style="cursor: move;" width="213" /></div>
<br />
WHILE the person in the back PULLS hard and ties the tufting twine in a knot around the sagless webbing as quickly and firmly as possible. It helps to wear some gloves.<br />

<br />
<b>Step 8.)</b><br />
It is now time to get out the staple gun :)<br />
move the gathering around the edges around to where you want it and tack down (either with tacks or sparse staples) Cut a length of piping that goes around the entire headboard. Find the center of the piping and staple to the top center of the headboard. Start working your way around the headboard with the piping making clips in the seam allowance to help go around the corners.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwwGUD4m7QozOSqrFkhTohyphenhyphenlU_Vl1oByevFQ25gOBN-5SAUAe2acRl9f087VLtCefd2DGvGMZiOg_1RxOvyhTHf9BLhgeBcbyhT579ykv2w8hCWIMl-kNvwqkqxj_J1w6v8UgJG6199zun/s1600/IMG_1749.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwwGUD4m7QozOSqrFkhTohyphenhyphenlU_Vl1oByevFQ25gOBN-5SAUAe2acRl9f087VLtCefd2DGvGMZiOg_1RxOvyhTHf9BLhgeBcbyhT579ykv2w8hCWIMl-kNvwqkqxj_J1w6v8UgJG6199zun/s400/IMG_1749.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Step 9.)</b><br />
Cut one of your 7" strips in half and sew each half to one of the other 7" strips (making sure to keep the grain consistent)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU41AjXDJANiT6Z0srhQagYcr7K0F5nuEF_cFOp0hKs1mwq43tnXGD3Lrm6xX068pkXaOdsTXHjw95xQrhx1vwmGGT-7jwDTsgV2NZrjfN9alYw5h4k46277zFjoj7fOXWyq4MT4-8zW8S/s1600/IMG_1747.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU41AjXDJANiT6Z0srhQagYcr7K0F5nuEF_cFOp0hKs1mwq43tnXGD3Lrm6xX068pkXaOdsTXHjw95xQrhx1vwmGGT-7jwDTsgV2NZrjfN9alYw5h4k46277zFjoj7fOXWyq4MT4-8zW8S/s400/IMG_1747.JPG" width="400" /></a> </div>
<br />
<b>Step 10.)</b><br />
According to my mentor, this is the incorrect way to do this. You are supposed to be able to look at your work when you secure it. So you would start in the back and use tack strip or plygrip to secure to the front. However, this is the easier way, and still looks as professional if you are careful....<br />
<br />
Place the edge of the fabric (right side down) and the tack strip over the seam allowance of the piping and staple down<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpZWn8pLVoedKmO-iYTUPRCq2OW4sTpMX02s9-53638dwEczfpm4oHprQ70qPwCuRCeSzctDOHxBNNoeS7Wt8bWg-78t8HHICMdztz4gSPaxizrKYIV15HNQ-QwLvVHL-cUIlvHTvIwkMV/s1600/IMG_1748.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpZWn8pLVoedKmO-iYTUPRCq2OW4sTpMX02s9-53638dwEczfpm4oHprQ70qPwCuRCeSzctDOHxBNNoeS7Wt8bWg-78t8HHICMdztz4gSPaxizrKYIV15HNQ-QwLvVHL-cUIlvHTvIwkMV/s400/IMG_1748.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
repeat for the other side<br />
<br />
<b>Step 11.)</b><br />
Lay down a couple of layers of cotton or Dacron.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlxX3IOPte3hIDAvT-o1Mc9uyKoPgY2-QBtRit_My2rfuWiXDYDQvEgmnRZG3s42ivu4h9EZp-M9Da8ljbj0q3K-s5BLqWPO0FVv8udjLEWIxU88Ts6SthTCteZlm4UpGe6UkGHYYOIeXP/s1600/IMG_1753.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlxX3IOPte3hIDAvT-o1Mc9uyKoPgY2-QBtRit_My2rfuWiXDYDQvEgmnRZG3s42ivu4h9EZp-M9Da8ljbj0q3K-s5BLqWPO0FVv8udjLEWIxU88Ts6SthTCteZlm4UpGe6UkGHYYOIeXP/s400/IMG_1753.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Prop the headboard up on something (I used the ottoman and my sons toy). Start in the middle of the side and wrap your fabric around and staple. Work your way outward in both directions, pulling the fabric tight and at a slight angle to prevent wrinkling. and staple :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAP5oSCN5rkvc58lNkP__EK1HcyGRFOsGtrL0_c3haCbZgM_JLj-6QwE0iWYczyAtGb-I8tR5SlDvrLxztbC1Ld1976gPh4iamCNf4TH_1GycUlwXfM5aGdbg5eFShRskiI4Z7wWBg7Dxd/s1600/IMG_1763.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAP5oSCN5rkvc58lNkP__EK1HcyGRFOsGtrL0_c3haCbZgM_JLj-6QwE0iWYczyAtGb-I8tR5SlDvrLxztbC1Ld1976gPh4iamCNf4TH_1GycUlwXfM5aGdbg5eFShRskiI4Z7wWBg7Dxd/s400/IMG_1763.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
When you get to the top and bottom, neatly fold and secure.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge0JTxZdQb7THaBPL0i6HVJft6CPxbGJn_IaWRfmm7_Ex_oNe0A1ZFklinZlqlVRQ8Fi0eXvKU5srUpSxGSkEc9jf6f46wK1LWlJo8xGd2GJwVHFtyU4Nm8mR7W2fBRUAsj1F8gl_80I4r/s1600/IMG_1759.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge0JTxZdQb7THaBPL0i6HVJft6CPxbGJn_IaWRfmm7_Ex_oNe0A1ZFklinZlqlVRQ8Fi0eXvKU5srUpSxGSkEc9jf6f46wK1LWlJo8xGd2GJwVHFtyU4Nm8mR7W2fBRUAsj1F8gl_80I4r/s200/IMG_1759.JPG" width="133" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguhyaoT57O-YHMk4lZU6iotiSdom6wu5XtQ3BdTTndGDhwbq8EuKxpOOi8j9LQcPXKB6G-t8k61GassFjlkBl7q2Q3xxE5Q8fcwAfHQai96GMUSkTntiwuImwgW_bfG7jQKJtv2aU-kRhp/s1600/IMG_1762.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguhyaoT57O-YHMk4lZU6iotiSdom6wu5XtQ3BdTTndGDhwbq8EuKxpOOi8j9LQcPXKB6G-t8k61GassFjlkBl7q2Q3xxE5Q8fcwAfHQai96GMUSkTntiwuImwgW_bfG7jQKJtv2aU-kRhp/s200/IMG_1762.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Step 12.)</b><br />
If I had to do this step over again, I would do it the same way I did the sides. Instead I did it the hard (but semi-correct) way<br />
Start by finding the middle of your fabric and securing it to the back center of the headboard. You can leave it rectangular and make cuts or cut it (with plenty of excess) to follow the curve. Lay down your cotton and cover with muslin (I did not do this and wish I had). Then apply your plygrip along the edge of the piping and muslin (which also smooths out the lumpy-ness. Oh, and clip off the plygrip from the corners, you don't need it there).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaAFdpIBL-iNrTFDMirpvu0JC9omtBCWeoIvxA8ESlds8KYca1VSt4FQRlvQoP9zSHkpiG-HwP3FQXINYv1dDRENmoU77Wp1Hla5g9Dn-E88MVl-gXaDniEPOPI_SpLj6WPLAA9NlVGV59/s1600/IMG_1786.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaAFdpIBL-iNrTFDMirpvu0JC9omtBCWeoIvxA8ESlds8KYca1VSt4FQRlvQoP9zSHkpiG-HwP3FQXINYv1dDRENmoU77Wp1Hla5g9Dn-E88MVl-gXaDniEPOPI_SpLj6WPLAA9NlVGV59/s400/IMG_1786.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Fold the plygrip most of the way down. Again, starting in the middle, wrap your fabric around and catch on the plygrip. Trim off the excess fabric<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGVmJtuSd1ow4JoYJNVZ80_kmswXVAKLuuMrPcVi89RRGRrbs3-LPeuLhCZhOdcnI0ToN_OvdOObEjE4ar3wpAHS31Hf8hfm7qb7h8tudKXBGaAzHn144AiVAg2uU-Gn2cZjiapi-PNHaZ/s1600/IMG_1792.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGVmJtuSd1ow4JoYJNVZ80_kmswXVAKLuuMrPcVi89RRGRrbs3-LPeuLhCZhOdcnI0ToN_OvdOObEjE4ar3wpAHS31Hf8hfm7qb7h8tudKXBGaAzHn144AiVAg2uU-Gn2cZjiapi-PNHaZ/s400/IMG_1792.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
push the fabric into plygrip with the regulator (or bbq skewer)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixkfZZO7ZxLmSIJb_fDExJJjXYXUMc6l9sVzbAQqGvuHBS9ov2Kv8Mw8Odsm-aqfwiB4QPvqojA9pRdO6vLH6gUyN1kIPeZJeO1GLnmBOe3HYNORRp6ogfG-JybSoSUF_lLXKty_N4BhDO/s1600/IMG_1794.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixkfZZO7ZxLmSIJb_fDExJJjXYXUMc6l9sVzbAQqGvuHBS9ov2Kv8Mw8Odsm-aqfwiB4QPvqojA9pRdO6vLH6gUyN1kIPeZJeO1GLnmBOe3HYNORRp6ogfG-JybSoSUF_lLXKty_N4BhDO/s400/IMG_1794.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
and hammer down the plygrip.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhasEFmNJmy7XvJkwujvTTjUKVTvsWUrizavZxjrk8ybeyRKoWoo31kc5GRrgmp_RFn0DmfIkMX_hryrcIc8zeWYlENPh_PqaxmFHSHjC8pOieaos4M84IvdFrrtD894bSfEvw9QobwlFxU/s1600/IMG_1799.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhasEFmNJmy7XvJkwujvTTjUKVTvsWUrizavZxjrk8ybeyRKoWoo31kc5GRrgmp_RFn0DmfIkMX_hryrcIc8zeWYlENPh_PqaxmFHSHjC8pOieaos4M84IvdFrrtD894bSfEvw9QobwlFxU/s320/IMG_1799.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Pull and smooth at a 45 degree angle to prevent wrinkling until you get to the corners.<br />
<br />
When you get to the corner, Fold the fabric at a 45 degree angle, wrap tightly around to the back and staple. For extra security, use a <a href="http://www.embroiderersguild.com/stitch/stitches/ladder.html" target="_blank">ladder stitch</a> to sew the corner down.<br />
and you are done!!!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfW0TPYG7f0S7kfeWR3UX-H_aFYzAWk0APGnUa3V4sXN8FF9LiAosr6Wl59OKgiG9x8oTB901nxM3mLNH5Y4RxSlB_Q0JJxomHHjbwK54at4RiqSCQ_Ida9PJ3QZd7KxJ3wjlzlEPJVQRH/s1600/IMG_1802.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="385" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfW0TPYG7f0S7kfeWR3UX-H_aFYzAWk0APGnUa3V4sXN8FF9LiAosr6Wl59OKgiG9x8oTB901nxM3mLNH5Y4RxSlB_Q0JJxomHHjbwK54at4RiqSCQ_Ida9PJ3QZd7KxJ3wjlzlEPJVQRH/s400/IMG_1802.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Just attach to your frame and enjoy!<br />
I designed this so the foam will tightly fit right over the top of the mattress, preventing that annoying situation where your phone falls behind the bed or your pillow slides halfway off the back of the bed, between the mattress and the headboard (don't you just HATE that!)<br />
Well, problem solved!<br />
Enjoy!!!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I saw a whole series of book displays at Anthropologie in Boise, ID a couple of years ago and was completely inspired to add some book art to my house. Only, it took 2 years and 3 moves to finally do something about it...</div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>This is what I saw in the store:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i-cdn.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages/chicago/111108-anthropologie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i-cdn.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages/chicago/111108-anthropologie.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
and I thought, I could make that! So here we go!<br />
<br />
<b>First, the supplies you will need to collect:</b><br />
Old hardcover book (our <a href="http://www.habitat.org/cd/env/restore.aspx" target="_blank">Re-store</a> usually has them for free)<br />
Exacto Knife or Razor Blade<br />
Tape<br />
Elmers or Hot Glue<br />
Calculator or Pencil/Paper<br />
Small Hook<br />
Fishing Line<br />
<b><br /></b>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0MGiYNEL6H866T8pTfqR-E5-BiTN9aTW-xvCJ2CcAl5y8-3Jj0-buv8058kJTdMaZpReb-UhGfJ6KGf_BgylG97TIk4OF52P1pywJXdrTQU18Lu7L9fRbtFn86_PYdHoB6_A-Qo8TFXEn/s1600/IMG_4196.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0MGiYNEL6H866T8pTfqR-E5-BiTN9aTW-xvCJ2CcAl5y8-3Jj0-buv8058kJTdMaZpReb-UhGfJ6KGf_BgylG97TIk4OF52P1pywJXdrTQU18Lu7L9fRbtFn86_PYdHoB6_A-Qo8TFXEn/s400/IMG_4196.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<b>1.) </b><b>Start by going to the last page in your book (600 for me) and dividing the number of loops you want on the top row (7).</b> (I ended up with one extra because I left the blank back page)</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
So for me, there were 85 pages to each section of which I only wanted to keep 5 pages. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<b><b> 2.) Now we start cutting!</b> Start at the beginning of the book, count 5 pages, then cut out each section amount - 5 (for me this was 80 pages. 85-5 = 80)</b></div>

<div style="text-align: right;">

<div style="text-align: right;">
<b> 3.) Time to glue! </b>Take a section of pages still attached to the book spine and apply some Elmers or hot glue. I personally think hot glue will work better for this, but I was out of glue sticks :)</div>

fold the pages over and glue, being careful not to put a crease in your pages.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: right;">
<b>4.) Collect 3-5 page sections</b> that are still connected by bookbinding glue and tape or glue them into loops (again being careful not to crease the pages)</div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: right;">
<b>5.) Now get creative!! </b>With the book laying open, take your loops and tape or glue them in-between the base set of loops until you get a pattern or series that you like. It is easier to glue the sides of the loops (more surface area)</div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglT4TWf6qqFRHu7GR1i8RcckLpFA1lJmUTDez1XddC4I7vGZ37jB5MKo1TLFpDtpXcoSkzpgiBDpZoODLhiu11frWl4Htmkoz7aOvOnoqds7eS8vCEz_Hh9eoT0CpGw0ubPBvFradCXTLG/s1600/2011-09-28+15.17.16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglT4TWf6qqFRHu7GR1i8RcckLpFA1lJmUTDez1XddC4I7vGZ37jB5MKo1TLFpDtpXcoSkzpgiBDpZoODLhiu11frWl4Htmkoz7aOvOnoqds7eS8vCEz_Hh9eoT0CpGw0ubPBvFradCXTLG/s400/2011-09-28+15.17.16.jpg" width="282" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You can also glue the tops of some loops and fan each page down to make smaller raining loops.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Done!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now just string 2 pieces of fishing line along the spine to hold the book open and hang from a hook in the ceiling :)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Decorate your reading nook, hang several around a light to create an eye-catching centerpiece or can use old children's books for a fun mobile in a baby's room! Oh the possibilities!</b></div>

So I am rounding the bend on my husbands awesome purple wingback chair (that I am doing in my class) and have been trolling for <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/sprucehome" target="_blank">inspiration</a>. In doing such, I have learned that the wingback is back...<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;">Because many people who want to recover a single piece in their home are doing so as not to have to spend a ton of money to get what they want, I am giving you 2 toolbox lists for every step (and a full compiled list later on...). One toolbox list will consist of things I had lying around my house when I did my first chair, or necessities that are on the inexpensive side (i.e. a $20 staple gun + hammer). This jacket was my first <a href="http://pinterest.com/haleysonofander/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>
inspired creation that really got me out of my mommy funk and got me
really creating things again. The inspiration came from this <a href="http://tatertotsandjello.com/2010/11/guest-project-make-asymmetrical-toddler.html" target="_blank">guest blog</a> on about a little girls jacket pattern sized using a onsie (or t-shirt).<br />
My Momma-in-Law helped me with the liner and we finished the jacket in 2 evenings!<br />
I was so pumped, I made a hat, boots, and tail to match--and the Mad Hatter hat for my husband using the video tutorial found on <a href="http://www.threadbanger.com/tb-projects/episode/THR_20091009" target="_blank">Threadbanger</a>!<br />
<br />
<b>I was discovering a whole world of inspiration online and it was amazing!</b><br />

To keep up this renewed spirit and love of life, I've decided to do a 52 week challenge of <a href="http://pinterest.com/haleysonofander/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a> inspired creations and to blog about them along with my ongoing upholstery learning and tutorials. I would love for you to join me or better yet, provide some innovative inspiration! If you are reading this wondering how I made the jacket, stay tuned because I will be posting a how-to with my alterations to the original design very soon. Happy Pinning :)<br />

My name is Haley and I am an Engineer gone MOM. Prior to my current job I had the opportunity to work with a subcontractor for NASA on the next space suit design. As you can imagine I often get asked: What do you do now?<br />
Well….aside from the all consuming momhood, I have recently discovered a knack and passion for upholstery. and I LOVE it.<br />

<b>I hope to use this blog as a journal of what I have learned and as a tutorial of sorts for beginners to freshen up that old piece in their home.</b></div>
<br />
<u>NOTE:</u> The information on this site is only my opinion and what I have learned from others and from making mistakes. I will do my best to give you all the info you need to go out there and hipholster it up. <b>If you are concerned about your piece turning out pristine, I advise buying/borrowing professional tools, taking a class in your community, or paying for a professional job.<u> However, you will be surprised how great your piece can look with a little time and elbow grease</u>.</b>Haley Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15847890249233960193noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135991924648950515.post-1460131596476224982011-09-23T00:11:00.000-05:002012-04-16T00:58:49.405-05:00Hello!So, I have attempted to blog several times for the benefit of my posterity, to keep a journal, or to let my friends and family see what I am up to...so far, 3 failed attempts.<br />
I realized that if I'm going to blog about what I'm doing, it should be about the fun stuff I'm doing, the things I am learning, not just the day to day cuteness of my kid and general awesomeness of my husband. So here you go world (or maybe just family and close friends with internet access)<br />
